Rotavirus vaccine helps to protect your children against gastroenteritis (stomach and intestine inflammation resulting in severe vomiting and diarrhoea) caused by a rotavirus infection.
Rotavirus vaccine is to be given orally.
This medicine may be given with or without food, milk, or breast milk.
Your doctor or nurse will administer the vaccine to your child.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that your child does not miss any doses.
If your child missed an appointment, alert the doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment should be given as soon as possible.
Rotavirus vaccine should not be given if your child ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Rotavirus vaccine.
Alert you doctor if your child has the following conditions:
- history of intussusception (a bowel obstruction in which a part of bowel becomes enfolded into the adjacent part of the bowel)
- severe combined immunodeficiency or SCID (a rare inherited illness which affects the immune system)
- uncorrected malformation of the gut that could lead to intussusception
as Rotavirus vaccine may not be suitable for your child.
Inform your doctor if your child has the following conditions:
- stomach or bowel disorders
- weak immune system
- blood disorders
- any type of cancer
- HIV infection
- has not been gaining weight or not growing as expected
- born earlier than expected as it may cause immaturity of lung function
- has close contact with family or household members that has weak immune system e.g. person with cancer, taking medicines or therapy that may cause a weak immune system
If your child experiences illness with high fever, diarrhoea, or vomiting, inform your doctor immediately as it may be necessary to postpone the immunisation of your child with the Rotavirus vaccine until recovery.
Inform your doctor if your child has recently received any other vaccine. Do not receive any vaccinations without first asking your doctor.
Rotavirus vaccine may cause any of the following side effects: vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach wind, abdominal pain, irritability, tiredness, fever, cough, runny nose, loss of appetite and inflammation of the middle ear.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if your child experiences other side effects.
